ABELDent Achieves Health Canada Class II Medical Device Licence
|
|
On July 23, 2010, ABELDent 9.3.1 (English) and ABELDent 9.4.0 (French) achieved the Health Canada Class II Medical Device Licence. Under the Food and Drug Act, Health Canada reviews medical devices to assess their safety, effectiveness and quality before authorizing them for sale in Canada. Since 2003, Health Canada has required manufacturers and distributors of dental products to obtain medical device licenses for their products.
Until recently dental software has operated in a “grey area” outside of the Health Canada’s medical device licence process. In the absence of specific language regarding software, vendors were not compelled to seek this licensing. The notice issued on August 31, 2009 addresses this issue and clearly identifies that patient management software requires a medical device licence.
Here are just a few of the several steps ABEL has taken to ensure that we offer a superior quality software to health care professionals:
- ABEL obtained the Health Canada Class II Medical Device Licence on July 23, 2010
- ABEL obtained the ISO 13485:2003 Quality Management System certificate, a prerequisite for the Class II Medical Device licence, on June 7, 2010
- ABEL has designated a Quality Management System Officer and an Internal Auditor to ensure ongoing monitoring and maintenance of quality management processes
